INAUGURAL CASE STUDY COMPETITION

In Fall of 2020, ASA hosted its very own actuarial case competition. Students in groups of 3-4 were asked to estimate the liabilities associated with all of a company’s workers compensation policies ever written, taking into consideration a catastrophic event that occurred at the company. The case focused on reserving and introduced concepts of IBNR, loss development, severity, and ultimate costs.

Students employed Excel and the presentation tool of their liking. Students were free to use other modeling and data analysis softwares to improve their final product.

In Fall 2021, the ASA hosted the second annual actuarial case competition which was now state-wide and featured 12 different teams from various Texas universities. This larger competition had significantly more presentations and was sponsored by the CAS, Markel, AON, and the ASA.

More information is available on our Microsoft Teams from our past meeting.
